Privacy Policy

Last updated: [PLACEHOLDER: effective / last-updated date after counsel approval]

Hopscotch Education ([PLACEHOLDER: exact legal entity name, e.g. "Hopscotch Education, Inc."] ; "Hopscotch," "we," "us," or "our") provides a math homework help product at https://www.hopscotcheducation.com (the "Service").

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how we share it, and the choices available to you. It applies to the Service, including Google sign-in and the Google Drive file picker used to open homework files you choose.

If you do not agree with this policy, do not use the Service.

1. Who this policy covers

This policy covers people who use the Service, including learners and anyone who creates or manages an account for them.

Age / minors eligibility (needs counsel): [PLACEHOLDER: COPPA / minors eligibility — confirm whether the Service is offered only to users 13 and older, whether parent/guardian consent is required for under-13 users, whether schools may provide consent under COPPA’s school exception, and the exact age gate shown at sign-up. A historical product decision record said "13+ only" and invite-only sign-in; that is not counsel-approved language for this published page. Lily + Donica must set the live rule.]

2. Information we collect

2.1 Account and sign-in information

When you sign in with Google, we receive information Google shares for the scopes we request. For production, those scopes are:

Depending on Google’s response, this may include your Google account identifier, name, email address, and profile photo. We use this information to authenticate you and operate your account.

[PLACEHOLDER: confirm exactly which Google profile fields are stored by Hopscotch versus held only by the identity provider / Google, and for how long.]

2.2 Homework and learning content

If you use the Drive file picker, we may read the contents of files you select so we can help with that homework. Product direction is to read those files on demand for the session or task, and not to keep permanent copies of raw homework in Hopscotch storage when Drive remains the source of truth.

We may also process:

[PLACEHOLDER: retention period for (a) raw file bytes if any are temporarily cached, (b) extracted problem text, (c) attempt / progress records, (d) learner-profile fields. State deletion triggers: session end, fixed hours/days, account deletion, or parent/school request.]

2.3 Technical and usage information

We may collect device and browser information, IP address, approximate location derived from IP, timestamps, error logs, and product analytics needed to run and secure the Service.

[PLACEHOLDER: list analytics / logging tools actually enabled in production (or state "none beyond hosting provider logs"). Do not claim Sentry, Datadog, or similar unless configured.]

2.4 Information we do not intentionally collect

We do not ask for Social Security numbers, payment card numbers on this page’s product surface described here, or biometric identifiers.

[PLACEHOLDER: payment / billing data path if subscriptions are live; otherwise keep "not collected for the current Drive beta surface."]

3. How we use information

We use the information above to:

  1. Provide math homework help and related learning features
  2. Authenticate you and keep the Service secure
  3. Remember progress and preferences across sessions
  4. Diagnose outages and improve reliability
  5. Communicate about the Service (for example support replies)
  6. Comply with law and enforce our terms

We do not sell personal information. We do not use student education records or homework content for targeted advertising. We do not allow advertising networks to track learners across sites via the Service.

AI / model processing: Homework text or images you provide may be sent to a model provider solely to generate tutoring help for that request. [PLACEHOLDER: name each model / AI provider used in production; state whether the provider is contractually barred from training on customer content; state retention settings on the provider side.]

4. How we share information (service recipients / subprocessors)

We share personal information only with:

Current known categories / vendors (incomplete — counsel must finalize):

We will update this list when vendors change. [PLACEHOLDER: whether Hopscotch publishes a standalone subprocessor list URL, and notice period before material changes.]

5. Google Drive access (important)

Hopscotch requests the drive.file scope. That means:

Revoking access stops future Drive reads. It does not automatically delete Hopscotch account data already stored under this policy; see Section 8.

6. Children’s privacy (COPPA) and student privacy (FERPA)

6.1 Children under 13 (COPPA)

[PLACEHOLDER: Lily + Donica — choose and write one clear posture, for example:

  • Option A: Service is 13+ only; under-13 users are not permitted; describe age gate and account removal if discovered.
  • Option B: Under-13 users may use the Service only with verifiable parental consent; describe the consent flow.
  • Option C: Under-13 users may use the Service only through a school that provides consent under COPPA’s school exception; describe school agreement requirements.

Until this placeholder is filled, do not publish.]

We do not use children’s personal information for targeted advertising.

6.2 Schools and FERPA (when applicable)

If Hopscotch is used under a school or district agreement, we intend to act as a "school official" (or equivalent service provider) under the school’s direction, use student data only to provide the contracted Service, and not sell student data.

[PLACEHOLDER: whether a standard DPA / CSDPA (California Student Data Privacy Agreement) is offered; link when available.]

6.3 California student privacy (SOPIPA / related)

For K–12 students in California, we do not use covered student information for targeted advertising or to amass a profile for a purpose other than providing the Service.

[PLACEHOLDER: counsel confirmation of SOPIPA / AB 1584 language and any required contract terms.]

7. Cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies or local storage as needed for sign-in sessions and basic product function.

[PLACEHOLDER: cookie table — name, purpose, duration, first/third party. State whether any advertising cookies exist (expected: none).]

8. Retention and deletion

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes above, unless a longer period is required by law.

[PLACEHOLDER: retention schedule by data type — account records; Drive-derived homework content; attempts/progress; logs; backups. Include maximum retention for any ephemeral cache of homework bytes.]

Deletion requests: email liam.hyde@hopscotcheducation.com with the account email used to sign in. We will delete or anonymize personal information we control, subject to legal retention needs, within [PLACEHOLDER: response SLA, e.g. 30 days].

Revoking Google access (Section 5) is separate from deleting your Hopscotch account data.

9. Security

We use industry-standard measures intended to protect personal information, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), access controls, and private storage for application data.

No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. [PLACEHOLDER: encryption-at-rest confirmation for each store; breach-notification timeline and contact process.]

10. Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export personal information, or to opt out of certain processing.

California (CCPA/CPRA) summary: We do not sell or "share" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are commonly defined. [PLACEHOLDER: counsel to confirm CCPA "sale"/"share" statements and any required "Do Not Sell or Share" link.]

EEA/UK users: [PLACEHOLDER: whether the Service is offered to EEA/UK residents; if yes, legal bases, transfer mechanism (SCCs), and DPO contact. If not offered, say so.]

11. International transfers

We are based in the United States. If you use the Service from another country, your information may be processed in the United States.

[PLACEHOLDER: transfer safeguards if serving users outside the US.]

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy. We will post the updated version at https://www.hopscotcheducation.com/privacy and change the "Last updated" date. [PLACEHOLDER: whether material changes also get email notice.]
